Map Covered Gift Boxes

I got a pretty globe as a christmas present and wanted to create some other map decor so I could place them both on my evolving bookcase.

Pictured above is my wife’s (a great geographer in her own right) cartographically inspired care package that is complete with a Del’s Lemonade packet (A Rhode Island cultural icon http://www.dels.com/ ).  This is a little something for the AP Human Geography readings…what a great spouse!  Click on the link to find instructions on how to create your own.

Can Anything Save the Drying Southwest?

See on Scoop.itGeography Education

Many of the fruits and vegetables you eat come from a region that, before long could be too parched to grow anything…

The Southwest is climatically a dry region, but population pressures put an added strain on finite water resources and agricultural production typically consumes much of the world’s available freshwater.  This article argues that California should follow the lead of Israel and use drip irrigation to conserve water while still producing food in a dry area.

See on Scoop.itGeography Education

With the slight resurgence of U.S. manufacturing in the recent years—termed a potential “manufacturing moment” by some—it is important to consider not just the future of manufacturing in America but also its geography.

This interactive map is brimming with potential to both teach and learn about the changing industrial geographies of the United States.

Europe’s failure to integrate Muslims

See on Scoop.itGeography Education

Laws restricting Islamic symbols in the public sphere are fuelling political distrust and a shared sense of injustice.

One of the free response questions in the 2012 AP Human Geography test focused on increasing Muslim population in many European countries.  The Muslim community has (in the view of most Europeans polled) has not adequately assimilated into European society, and with many Europeans feeling a cultural threat, have created a politically charged situation.  Has Europe failed integrate Muslims or have Muslims failed to integrate in Europe?  Is this a problem?  Why or why not?  To see the APHG test question, click here:  http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/public/repository/ap_frq_human_geo_2012.pdf

Persian or Iranian? Is there a Difference?

See on Scoop.itGeography Education

Over the next few months, Ajam Media Collective will host a series that focuses on and describes various elements of the cultural, ethnic and linguistic mosaic that we refer to collectively as Iran…

What is in a name?  We know that there are subtle differences between Hispanic, Indigenous, Latino and Mexican that are bound with the history of these words and how they have been used by both insiders and outsiders to construct identity.  Likewise, the distinctions between the terms Persian and Iranian are often used interchangeably.  However there are political, ethnic, linguistic and religious connotations that shape the meanings behind these terms.  While I don’t necessarily agree with all of the arguments, this is an interesting look at the historical roots of these distinctions and the ramifications of these terms.

See on Scoop.itGeography Education

With desertification, drought and a booming mining industry, Mongolians are leaving the traditional life of herding. Herdsman Bat-Erdene Badam says he will be the last in his family to tend livestock.

How is globalization changing the traditional pastoral society of Mongolia?  As China’s industrial production was ballooned, their need for mineral resources has need towards more mining jobs in Mongolia.  For more information and pictures on this topic, see: http://www.npr.org/series/152995168/mongolia-booms
