Los Angeles Walking Tour

“This map-based site contains hundreds of images of downtown Los Angeles, Displaying its tremendous architectural, cultural, and economic diversity. Maps of seven downtown subregions are accessible either by clicking on this map or on the list of subregion names to the left. Each regional map provides access to specific places in downtown in the same way.”

This is a great example of a neighborhood project than shows the economic and cultural differences between places.

‘Geography Education’ posts Geo-coded

I’m pleased to announce that for GIS Day, I created a map that has hyperlinks to regionally specific posts that I put on ‘Geography Education.’  This map was created using ArcGIS Online (here’s a free tutorial on how to to use ArcGIS Online tailored for K-12 educators).  This is just another way to search for materials on this site.  Feel free to embed this map on your webpage or share the link.  Happy GIS Day!

Redistricting Results

While this cartoon is flippant, the attached Washington Post article is not.  In the culumative congressional voting, Democrats have more votes but won fewer seats than the Republicans.  Many are starting to question the redistricting process after the 2010 census.

As the heart of Islam, Mecca brings in pilgrims from around the world.  This documentary gives a great overview of the historical, spiritual and cultural reasons why this is sacred space to over one billion Muslims.  Additionally, this documentary contains an analysis of the logistics that are a part of the Hajj.

Old-School Library

This would be the perfect place to study.  Next time I’m at L’Istituto delle Scienze, Palazzo Poggi, Bologna, I will definitely find this spot.

Fulgurites

Fulgurites are the rocks that form when lightning strikes sand (there are other types as well) and forms a hollow tube.  Super cool!

Freedom of the Press

“Freedom House has been at the forefront in monitoring threats to media independence since 1980. A free press plays a key role in sustaining and monitoring a healthy democracy, as well as in contributing to greater accountability, good government, and economic development. Most importantly, restrictions on media are often an early indicator that governments intend to assault other democratic institutions.”

This interactive map shows some intriguing spatial patterns about the freedom of press internationally.  What other patterns to you see in matching up with the most free presses in the world (in green)?  How does a free (or not free press) influence the cultural and political values of a country?
