Persian or Iranian? Is there a Difference?

Over the next few months, Ajam Media Collective will host a series that focuses on and describes various elements of the cultural, ethnic and linguistic mosaic that we refer to collectively as Iran…

What is in a name?  We know that there are subtle differences between Hispanic, Indigenous, Latino and Mexican that are bound with the history of these words and how they have been used by both insiders and outsiders to construct identity.  Likewise, the distinctions between the terms Persian and Iranian are often used interchangeably.  However there are political, ethnic, linguistic and religious connotations that shape the meanings behind these terms.  While I don’t necessarily agree with all of the arguments, this is an interesting look at the historical roots of these distinctions and the ramifications of these terms.

Old Ways Disappearing In The New Mongolia

With desertification, drought and a booming mining industry, Mongolians are leaving the traditional life of herding. Herdsman Bat-Erdene Badam says he will be the last in his family to tend livestock.

How is globalization changing the traditional pastoral society of Mongolia?  As China’s industrial production was ballooned, their need for mineral resources has need towards more mining jobs in Mongolia.  For more information and pictures on this topic, see: http://www.npr.org/series/152995168/mongolia-booms

Why Canada needs a flood of immigrants

See on Scoop.itGeography Education

“Between now and 2021, a million jobs are expected to go unfilled across Canada. Ottawa is making reforms to the immigration system but isn’t going far enough. We need to radically boost immigration numbers. With the right people, Canada can be an innovative world power. Without them, we’ll drain away our potential.”  This article clearly articulates some of the economic ramifications of the later stages of the demographic transition and some of the difficulties that are associated with a declining internal population.

Mind the Map

See on Scoop.itGeography Education

The London Transportation Museum is currently hosting an exhibit entitled “Mind the Map: Inspiring Art, Design and Cartography” (which is a clever play on the omnipresent London Underground caution to ‘Mind the Gap’ when exiting or enter the subway).  From May 18th to October 28th this geographically-inspired exhibit will be open to the general public.  Yesterday at the Grand Opening, there were artists, authors and urban planners discussing their work, all of which dealt with the importance of transportation networks as an essential component to creating alternative urban visions.  There are also humanistic works of art that see transportation as the lifeblood of the city, pulsating to the rhythms of the diverse demographic segments and uniting Londoners.  This exhibit is absolutely for all London geographer teachers, or anyone visiting London before the exhibit closes on Oct 28, 2012.

The most successful investors in restaurants consider how a style fits an area and track who their customers are, said Hudson Riehle of the National Restaurant Association.

A successful business model for restaurants is about much more than quality food at an affordable price.  Ask your students: what geographic factors are important in starting a restaurant?

According to a new survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, three-quarters of U.S.

Smartphones have built-in location features with a host of apps that can be added.  However, 1  in 4 smartphone users do not use these features at all.  Age, ethnicity, education and gender (or in a word, demographic factors) play a major role.  Which groups would you imagine use geo-location features more or less?  Why?

While this image does not show the whole work of art, I wanted to show a close-up so that the circuitry could be seen.  Susan Stockwell is a cartographically inspired artist, who has frequently used maps as both medium and theme of her artwork.  With e-waste being a growing concern, the meanings behind this installation expands our understands of this piece.  For more of her work, see: http://www.susanstockwell.co.uk/
